A varázsdob az áldozati szertartást vezető, betegeket gyógyító, jövendőt mondó, vagy a bűvészet (nevezzük mágiának) valamely más ágában foglalatoskodó samán ezzel idézi meg s ebbe kényszeríti bele a szellemeket, ennek dübörgésével hozza magát és hallgatóit réületbe, ha pedig a dobot zörgető samán elvégre önkívületi állapotba jut, állítólag elszálló lelkét ez hordozza meg a szellemek világában.
